Understanding the Nikah
The nikah (نكاح) is the Islamic marriage contract that formalises the union between a man and a woman. It is both a legal and spiritual commitment, described by the Prophet ﷺ as completing half of one's deen. The nikah involves an offer (ijab) from the bride's side and acceptance (qabul) from the groom, witnessed by at least two witnesses.
The conditions for a valid nikah include: the consent of both parties, the approval of the bride's wali, the presence of witnesses, and the agreement on a mahr (dowry) — a gift from the groom to the bride. The mahr is her right and can be anything of value agreed upon by both sides. Some scholars also require a public announcement of the marriage.
Preparing for the nikah starts long before the ceremony itself. It begins with finding a suitable spouse, involving the families, conducting the mouqabala, and praying istikhara for guidance.
